Gum Therapy
Gum disease or periodontitis is an inflammation of the gums. Left untreated, gum disease can be very serious causing the loss of teeth and bone degeneration. Luckily with good, regular attention to brushing your teeth properly and regular cleanings at my dental practice, gum disease can be avoided.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria so cleaning is important. This includes both brushing and flossing. When brushing, you want to brush along the gumline, onto the gums. Doing this will stimulate blood flow in the gums helping to keep the tissues healthy. Of course, flossing between the teeth will prevent decay between teeth.
There is a proven link between gum disease and heart disease. As you age, it becomes increasingly important to avoid gum disease. Gum disease also can lead to lost teeth, and bone loss in older patients. So, we encourage regular visits for visual examinations and cleanings. Gum disease can be spotted visually by a dentist, so regular visits are important to keep this in check.
It is important to be aware of risk factors related to gum disease. If you smoke, have diabetes or have a family history of gum disease, you may want to be extra cautious when it comes to gum disease.
